Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Philippine Order of Narnians?

he Philippine Order of Narnians is the Philippines' (TPON) first and thus far only organized community of C.S. Lewis readers and enthusiasts, promoting discussion of all of Lewis works, exploring the themes he wrote about, and also discussing Lewis' impact in today's world.

How can I join TPON?

f you meet the basic membership requirements – which boil down to being a Lewis enthusiast and being Pinoy, all you have to do is join the mailing list or visit one of the activities (there’s always a summons on the horizon!) and tell the moderator in charge that you’d like to become a member. The moderator will tell you how. ^_^

Are memberships individual, or can we join TPON as a group?

embers of a single (nuclear or extended) family can avail of Family Membership, with lower per-head membership fees. Other than that, the group does not yet recognize any kind of group membership. If your organization would like, though, TPON can become a partner in your activities. Please try to call the attention of the high moderator via the mailing list.

Does the group have a Friendster account?

es. Add us up! filipinonarnians@bigfoot.com.

How can I learn more about TPON?

y experience! Come and join us during one of the summons – details are available on the mailing list.

Is TPON a formal organization?

e envision ourselves becoming an SEC-recognized nonprofit organization sometime in the future. We are in the process of building the organization up, training and strengthening its officers, and developing a constitution and by-laws.

What are TPON's activities?

ight now, we’re busy promoting the new Disney/Walden movie rendition of Prince Caspian. On ordinary months, we have ‘Summons’ – semi-formal get-togethers – once a month. This most often happens at Seattle’s Best Coffee at Greenbelt 3 Makati, or at Mosaic Lounge, which is on the third floor of Greenbelt 1, Makati. But since the venue and exact time changes, it’s best to check the schedule on the mailing list first.

Does TPON have concerns other than promoting CS Lewis’ works?

e envision TPON contributing to the community by promoting the enjoyment of quality literature among Filipino students. We hope to develop more activities along this line some time in 2008-2009.

Is TPON recognized by the CS Lewis Estate?

hile there are no formal ties between TPON and the CS Lewis Company, the CS Lewis Company is aware of our existence and is actually in touch with us. Douglas Gresham, who heads the estate and who happens to be Lewis’ stepson, has corresponded with the group several times before, and has said that he is ‘glad there is now [a CS Lewis association] in the Philippines.’ Whenever TPON refers to Lewis' works, it does so in keeping with the principles of Fair Use of Intellectual Property.

Does TPON concern itself only with Narnia, or does it cover other works as well?

ll of CS Lewis’ works are considered within the purview of TPON. We simply use the word “Narnians” because Narnia is by far Lewis’ most popular work. For example, ‘Till We Have Faces has easily become a group favorite – not much of a surprise because Lewis himself considered it his best work. In fact, some of the members have never read a Narnia book! They start off from some other Lewis work such as The Screwtape Letters or The Four Loves or even Perelandra!

What is a 'Summons' and when and where can I attend one?

ummons’ are our ‘EB’ get-togethers, which usually take place once a month. This most often happens at Seattle’s Best Coffee at Greenbelt 3 Makati, or at Mosaic Lounge, which is on the third floor of Greenbelt 1, Makati. But since the venue and exact time changes, it’s best to check the schedule on the mailing list first. During special occasions, we change venues – for example, the annual Parchment Summons, which is a group visit to the Annual Philippine Book Fair.

What is TPON's relationship with other Science Fiction and Fantasy groups?

he Philippine Order of Narnians is a proud member of The New Worlds Alliance. For more information and a list of member organizations, please visit The New Worlds Alliance Website (see links at the sidebar).
